Cemeteries

The Town of Altamont is responsible for the care and maintenance of two important community cemeteries: the Altamont Cemetery and the Altonah Cemetery. We are dedicated to ensuring these sacred grounds are well-preserved for generations to come.

Rules and Regulations

PLEASE OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING CEMETERY RULES:

SPEED LIMIT 5MPH

  • Cemetery is not responsible for any item left in the cemetery, on or off monuments.
  • No vases, bottles, or containers made of glass, plastic, or metal, that are not permanently affixed to grave markers.
  • Do not cut, break or injure trees, shrubs or other plants
  • Cemetery is not to be used for any sport or recreation.
  • No parking or loitering without purpose.
  • Do not litter or leave any trash behind. Place trash in receptacles.
  • No alcohol or drugs.
  • All decorations are to be on monuments or markers.

NOTHING IN THE GRASS (except on Holidays)

  • Artificial flowers are permitted but must be affixed to monument.
  • Artificial flowers will be removed and discarded if faded or degraded.
  • No parking or driving on the Lawns
  • Cemetery is not responsible for any maintenance of monuments or markers.
  • No planting of any kind.
  • No shepards hooks or fences
  • No picnicking
  • No pets

We are not responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged decorations or markers.

8-235. LANDSCAPING BY PRIVATE PERSONS. 

Except as provided by the rules and regulations of the governing body, it shall be unlawful for any person to erect or maintain any fence, corner post, coping or boundary of any kind, to plant any vegetation upon any lot or lots, street, alley or walk in the cemetery or to grade the ground or land thereof. The cemetery superintendent shall, whenever required, furnish the true lines of any lots according to official survey, shall prevent and prohibit any markings of the same except by official landmarks, and shall prevent and prohibit any grading thereof that might destroy or interfere with the general slope of the land.

8-236.              PLACEMENT OF MARKERS. 

It shall be unlawful for any person to erect, place or cause to be placed any marker or monument on any lot in cemetery in violation of the rules and regulations promulgated by the governing body regarding the placement, construction, and design of all such markers.

  1. Owners (or relatives or delegated or other responsible parties) of burial rights to grave sites of deceased persons buried in the Altamont and Altonah Cemeteries are required to erect, in a manner satisfactory to the Altamont Town Manager (under the direction and supervision of the town council), headstones, tombstones, markers, or other suitable monuments at the heads of graves with the name(s) of the deceased person(s) plainly inscribed thereon.
  2. Such headstones, tombstones, markers, or other suitable monuments shall not exceed these dimensions: base size - two (2) feet by four (4) feet, height - three (3) feet. All headstones, tombstones, markers, or other suitable monuments must be appropriately mounted on a cement base that extrudes three (3) to six (6) inches on all sides of the headstones, tombstones, markers, or other suitable monuments with an appropriate edge for mowing.
  3. Further, all headstones, tombstones, markers, or other suitable monuments must be in an orderly row and reasonably in line with all other such markers in that plot. (See 8-235)
  4. The use of any pole, post, stand, staff hook, or ornaments for hanging flowers or other related items must be mounted in the cement base. Any pole, post, stand, or ornament shall not be permitted to be placed at any other location in the cemetery.
  5. Benches (permanent or temporary) are no longer allowed at the cemetery. Benches currently located in the cemetery are exempt from this regulation.

 

8-237.              ADDITIONAL RULES AND REGULATIONS. 

  1. The governing body may promulgate by resolution such additional rules and regulations concerning the care, use, operation and maintenance of the cemetery as it shall deem necessary.
  2. The mayor may from time to time as the governing body deems necessary direct and publish a booklet of rules and regulations for the convenience of the purchasers of lots in the municipality cemetery. Such rules and regulations shall constitute a part of the terms and conditions under which owners and users may utilize the cemetery and shall form a supplement to this ordinance after they have been adopted as official by resolution of the governing body.

Any change in the rules and regulations shall be adopted by the governing body before such changes shall be official
